John Gough of Thornbury £SOLD

A most unusual 8 day longcase clock by John Gough of Thornbury.

The arched all over silvered dial with very little in the way of decoration, except for a ‘penny moon’ in the arch with painted moon and engraved graduations on the dial. Hours and minutes , subsiduary seconds and date dials, matching blued steel hands.

The solid mahogany case again quite unusual in style, but similar to other ‘Bristol’ cases of this period. Arched top with plain splats to the hood, plain case columns with Corinthian capitals which flank the cross-banded door. Base with quarter sawn panels and shaped feet.

Typical 19th. century movement, except for the extended under dial work to drive the moon.

Standing under 7 foot withy the provision for finials to the top.

Makers Information

John Gough of Thornbury, Gloucestershire is not listed but there was a William in Devises in the early 18th. century, and a Richard in Marshfield ( Glos.) in a census in 1851 aged 33 years. This is such an unusual name there must be a connection with these three men.
