James Smith of Stow £2,850

An early 30 hour country longcase with single hand by James Smith of Stow, probably a contemporary of Walter Archer.

Simply styled country longcase clock with square brass dial having silvered chapter ring with hours and quarters and a pretty blued steel hour hand.

The ‘birdcage’ movement of typical form for an early 30 hour clock with back to back trains and an outside countwheel controlled strike, with the large original bell.

Simple and plain case with few features, but having attained a good colour and patination.

These clocks are getting quite rare, as since the publication of several good books on the subject, have started taking them much more seriously.

Makers Information

James Smith is listed in Dowlers Gloucestershire Clockmakers as c. 1740, but nothing is known of him, save that he was working at the same time as Archer of Stow, and may have been apprenticed to him.
